Kind Words

“It was absolutely amazing having Colchee photograph our wedding. He made the both of us feel so comfortable and it really showed in our photos.
Couldn’t recommend him more!”

Budgie smuggler galore, champas flying left and right, you couldn’t dodge the palpable energy, it was like shooting fish in barrel - with the fish being a bloody good time.

I’ve known Kristy & Lachy for many moons - Kristy being one of my best mates sister - so when they announced they were tying the knot, I remember they asked me if I would like to be a guest or be the photographer at their wedding? I told them how does both sound? We already got along like a house on fire; our friendships were already as strong as an ox so it was a no brainer! Of course photographing your friends wedding adds pressure on top of what is already a high pressure job and as cheesy as this is, I felt honoured that they asked me to be the one to capture their day. But they put me to ease without any conscious effort because of the people they are - down to earth, kind, fun and real honest people, which is exactly what their day embodied and being a part of their day is exactly how I want to feel when photographing any wedding - feeling like a their mate.

It’s interesting photographing a mates wedding, I got told so many times ‘don’t you just want to enjoy the day and not have to work?’. And for me, well I wouldn’t have taken them up on their offer if I didn’t already love them so much - like I said, I felt honoured by their offer. But even more so, I’m now going to be the one person who get’s to spend the most amount of time with them throughout their entire day. I get to go behind the scenes, be like a fly on the wall right from the get go and witness but also be a part of all these little intricacies and moments that I never would’ve seen or be able to have an impacted if I wasn’t the photographer. For example, I was at Lachy’s parents place for preparation pics, I hadn’t even started photographing, we were just sitting around having a beer. I then told the boys “I reckon it’s a good time to start getting ready”. A couple mins later, Lachy walks out onto the porch in his suit jacket and not much else, in fact just budgie smugglers with the words “GROOM” on his arse and a little bowtie on the front. Or seeing Kristy in her dress for the first time with her bridesmaids and watching the girls reactions and seeing how much Kristy was glowing with a smile radiating from ear to ear. These are moment’s I’ll never forget and I feel incredibly lucky to witness as a wedding photographer.

Like I said, it wasn’t even a question in my mind whether to be a guest or photograph Kristy and Lachy’s wedding, I was strutting in there already knowing I was being perceived as a mate, which plays a huge part in the way I photograph a wedding. There was no tension in the air, they could be their true selves in front of me because they felt comfortable around me. And this isn’t just the case with these two, yes I happened to know them for many moons, but like any other couple who has chosen me to photograph their wedding, I would approach the day the exactly the same. We’ll catch up prior to your wedding day, as many times as you need, we’ll get to know each other, we’ll feel comfortable around each other before the big day and I’ll feel like your mate too from many moons ago. And I’m not just talking shit, I swear, I’ve got the goog reviews to back it up!

Kristy and Lachy’s specie day was held at the also specie Yarra Valley Estate. Located in the Yarra Valley (I know, you’d never guess it!), they had an outdoor ceremony, reception inside their open massive glass wall setting, letting in all that gorgeous light, cocktail style and canapé galore. It’s hard to get a bad shot at this place and I especially loved their edible forest which provides seed to plate, how bloody cool.

Anyway, here’s my little fly on the wall / think of me as a mate perspective.

Thanks again Kristy & Lachy.

Love Colchee.
