What is a Micro-Wedding, and Should I Have One?
Melbourne and Macedon Ranges photographer Alex Colcheedas discusses the benefits of a micro-wedding and how your day can be just as impressive with fewer guests.
A micro-wedding, as you can probably guess, is a smaller, downscaled wedding. Instead of 100, 150, or 200 guests, a micro-wedding consists more around the 20 - 50 guest size. You might have heard the term thrown around a bit lately as COVID-19 restrictions have done much to determine event number sizes. Because of the global pandemic, having a micro-wedding may be a last and only resort; however, micro-weddings are becoming normalised and, in some cases, are the first preference for would-be brides and grooms.
Getting married in the middle of a pandemic has ultimately given couples a tough choice to make, postpone, or drastically reduce the guest list. Now, with light at the end of the tunnel and things slowly getting back to normal, the tables are turning, and soon the choice will go back to: do I have a huge bonza, all-out, blow-out wedding, or a small-scale, money-saver, intimate wedding day, as Laura and Josh did.
The choice is yours, but I am here to point out why a micro-wedding is an excellent idea, the benefits of having one, and how you can still have a beautiful wedding day.
WHY HAVE A MICRO WEDDING?
Budget is an essential factor to consider when planning your wedding, but, sometimes, bigger is not better. If you have 200 plus guests, are you honestly going to have a genuine conversation with 200 people in the span of half a day or less? Of course not, that sounds exhausting. You will go from person to person, having the same conversation and introduction over and over again, and you won't be able to breathe, or even worse, take a bite of your cake, and we CANNOT have that! I would rather scoff my face with cake than tell the world I have 200 friends on my wedding guest list. Sorry, I am meant to be talking about budget, not cake…
It is as simple as this: reducing your guest list to 50 people or less will save you money in all directions, including food, drinks, and venue size, which opens doors to having your wedding just about anywhere you want - even your backyard if you're going to go to the extreme! Then you could put some of the money you have saved towards a great photographer (ahem, I'm available), incredible flowers, and even better cake, or your honeymoon, making your day more memorable and exciting.
Saving a bit of dough is just scratching the surface of the benefits of having a micro-wedding. There is a reason for having a small wedding, and it is worth its weight in gold. Weddings bring people together, more importantly, the nearest and dearest to you. And there is something raw and authentic about a micro-wedding; it is far more intimate, informal, and relaxing. Having a smaller crew of people keeps it close and personal, allowing you to have genuine quality conversations with all your guests and eat your cake, too, literally!
Overall, it comes down to you. How do you envision your day? What is most important to you? But if you want to keep it low key, relaxing, make it even more intimate, or want to save money without breaking the bank, a micro-wedding is without a doubt something you should consider.
WHERE CAN I HAVE A MICRO WEDDING?
There are plenty of venues around the Macedon Ranges and surrounding where you could have your micro wedding. The Burrows in Daylesford, the Emu and Bottom Homestead in Sunbury and Mount Macedon Winery, just to name a few. Or if the idea of a backyard wedding excites you, that could be just as beneficial. A backyard wedding will keep it intimate, make things convenient, and perhaps best of all, it’s without a doubt often a budget-friendly (if not free) venue.
