My Photography Style - the old ‘Golden-Sloth Retriever.’
Picture this: a sloth crossed with a golden retriever.
A bemused tiny furry face sits at the end of a blonde silky maned neck; stumpy legs hold its long body just off the ground. This creature’s got the relaxed, laid back characteristics of a sloth and the enthusiasm, friendliness, and warm temperament of a golden retriever.
That’s me in a nutshell – the old ‘Golden-Sloth Retriever.’ Although I’m less hairy, my head is slightly larger, and my body is more upright! It might sound like an odd combination, but trust me, it’s the animal mash-up that works when it comes to shooting a wedding.
There are many different photographers out there, even within the wedding photography industry, styles (and animal combos) differ significantly. Your photographer could lean toward a documentary or photojournalistic style. They could be more formal or traditional or have a candid and natural approach. Some might use a combination of traditional and documentary techniques. Choosing one style over another comes down to one thing… *drum roll*... THE COUPLE GETTING MARRIED! Though if I’m realistic, usually one of the couple is more concerned about the photographer and the other? They’re generally far more worried about having enough drinks for everyone and if they’ll be cold enough.
Ultimately, the style of photographer you choose to shoot your wedding day comes down to YOUR needs and no one else’s. So, if you want posed portraits, go with a traditional photographer. If you want your day told as a story, go with a documentary photographer. Or, if you want someone to capture your day as it folds out, honestly and naturally, go with a candid photographer.
My photography style is a combination of candid and documentary, but more on the candid side. I’m relaxed and laid-back, but I still want to tell a story, your story. I mix these two by standing back and catching everything as it unfolds, but then I also get in amongst it and evoke something special out of you.
I believe the role of a wedding photographer extends beyond just rocking up and taking photos. You’ve invited me into one of the most intimate days of your life, and that’s a privilege I take seriously.
I make sure to achieve my two primary goals for the day—one to make a connection with you both, and two, to get incredible, natural photos. I want you to feel like I’m one of your mates, which means we’ll be more relaxed and comfortable around each other, which will allow goal number two to happen by itself. If you’re comfortable around each other, the connection you share will speak volumes, as you’ll act as your unique selves and won’t feel the need to put on a show for me and my camera. That means we’ll create photos that, when you look at them in years to come, still take you back to that very moment in time.
So, if you’re looking for a photographer who is a peculiar mixture of sloth and gentle dog, relaxed, fun, and loyal, and someone who will go the extra mile to meet your needs, I’m your guy. I will make your day about more than just taking some photos, and I will be boogying on the dancefloor by the end of the night with you.
